Book Review – Women Talking by Miriam Toews

Wow.

Did not expect a book that is basically the minutes of a meeting to be this good. Granted, the meeting is a group of women in a Mennonite colony that are decided whether to leave or stay after discovering that the hurt they felt in the morning was not, in fact, the devil but being drugged and raped in their sleep by the men in the colony.

It is disturbing BUT most of the book happens after the fact and doesn’t dwell on the abuse. It dwells on the thoughts and discussion of the women, as seen through the eyes of August, a man they trust.

The writing is phenomenal. The emotion is raw and genuine, but the book is also funny at times.

I could very well envision this being put up as a play (and it probably will).

One of the best books I’ve read so far in 2021.
