Suddenly: Goosebumps. A Tribute to Chi Cheng

My day started with the sad news the Chi Cheng, Deftone’s bassist, died. He was in a car accident in 2008 and had been in a coma since then but his heart gave out unexpectedly last night.

The Deftones’ White Pony is one of my all time favorite records, an almost perfect rock album, atmospheric, dark an beautiful.

I am spending these days writing my first novel (as readers of this blog certainly know by now), which is about children who gain access to the dream world. And then, the goosebumps. Just now I was driving to the store, and put in the only Deftones CD I have in the car; their latest album, Koi No Yokan, on which Chi does not play as he was in a coma when it was recorded. By some odd impulse I forwarded to the last song, What Happened To You? The combination of a day spent thinking about a dreamworld and the Deftones gave me the biggest shivers of the year as the song played.

The lyrics that got to me are highlighted below.

In the winds of your cape
I’ve sailed with you
From the shore to the gates
We sway

We’re alive somewhere else
Far ahead of our time

In a game of display we break in two
We perform the hornets escape

We’re alive somewhere else
Still asleep someplace new

We’re ahead of our time
Floating through

The sky is falling down
This night belongs to you

Forty years in the winds
I’ve played with you.
For the rest of our days
I’ll remain

The sky is falling down
The night is calling you
A star is burning out
The sky belongs to you

We’re alive somewhere else
Still asleep someplace new
Far ahead of our time
Floating through

Thanks for the songs, Chi.
