I’m a big fan of movie trailers. I check Apple’s trailer site every week and am of the opinion that trailer-making is an art all to itself.
And here are three trailers that are giving me goosebumps these days.
1. Watchmen
I read the graphic novel before I saw the movie and really liked it. It has a special place on my bookshelf along with my Sandman collection and the works of Shaun Tan and Joe Sacco. I thought the movie was really good and did not mind the tweaking they did to the ending (read the book if you have to know). Re-watching the trailer now gives me goosebumps, every time.
2. The Great Gatsby
I just finished re-reading it this morning, and so am perhaps primed to like the trailer, but the Jack White (of the White Stripes) cover of U2’s Love is Blindness really makes the trailer for me.
3. The Dark Knight Rises
I thought the movie was good, but it was no Dark Knight. I’d tell you why, but Roger Ebert has already said it so much better than I could, among them:
It lacks the near-perfection of The Dark Knight, it needs more clarity and a better villain, but it’s an honorable finale.
So…. goosebumps?
The Great Gatsby, the scene in which Jay Gatsby throws those shirts… amazing. It’s one of my favorite scenes from the novel. I don’t even know why. But I bet Fitzgerald smiled a bit after he wrote it. It’s such a simple moment, within the grand scheme of the novel itself, but it tells so much about Gatsby’s ambition/obsession to impress Daisy.
